Description of vicinity: Zamagurie
The most northerly part of the Spiš region, bordering on Poland, consists of the attractively picturesque Zamagurie, an area which boasts an unusual wealth of natural beauties, historical heritage and unique folk architecture.
Pieniny National Park, with its inimitable "Three Crowns" crags, the Spišská Magura hills and Ľubovňa uplands and their typical "goral" villages, all have innumerable beauties to offer the perceptive tourist. In the summer months the forests are full of wild fruits and mushrooms, and anglers have the chance of some wonderful fishing in the clear waters of the Dunajec, Lipnička and Rieka rivers. In winter the skiers come into their own, for this picture-postcard landscape also has excellent slopes and tracks for downhill and cross-country skiing.
The greatest symbol of Zamagurie are the wild, inspiring Pieniny peaks. They are not very high, but this 35-kilometre range is surely one of the most beautiful and most valuable areas in Central Europe.
The most distinctive, dominant feature of Pieniny and the Zamagurie landscape as a whole is the majestic, three-pointed rocky peak called the "Three Crowns" (982 metres).
The steep Pieniny crags are washed by the River Dunajec, which is also the national border. With its fierce current it has carved a deep and narrow canyon 8.5 kilometres long through the limestone hills, forming an impressive sequence of rearing cliffs, sharp bends and charming meanders. The greatest attraction for tourists visiting Pieniny is to take a romantic ride down the Dunajec on typical "goral" wooden rafts amidst the beautiful natural scenery of Pieniny National Park. It is possible to start Dunajec raft rides at the village of Majere, or from one of the landing stages further downstream. The most spectacular part of the ride is through the stunning Dunajec Gorge down to Lesnica Creek. A nature trail also follows the river bank down through the Gorge.
Spišská Stará Ves
This town lies in the middle of the Zamagurie border region. Its district includes the village Lysá nad Dunajcom, which originated in the 14th century as the farm run by the monks of Červený Kláštor ("Red Monastery"). When another wave of German settlers came in the 19th century, it became a village in its own right, named Golembark under the influence of the German language.
The original settlement of Spišská Stará Ves, recorded under the name of Antiqua Villa, was founded in the year 1326 on the old trade route from Poland to Hungary, and due to its advantageous position it was able to build up its own trading tradition. It enjoyed the privilege of holding a market every Tuesday, and its inhabitants were exempt from paying customs duty and road tolls. In 1399 the Hungarian king awarded Spišská Stará Ves town privileges, with the right to import, store and export wine, beer and other beverages.
The town's development was hampered from the 15th century onwards, when it was first ravaged by pseudo-Hussite mercenaries, and later afflicted by counter-Reformation wars, fires, epidemics and famines, whose ultimate consequence was a decline in the number of inhabitants and emigration of the remaining people away from the border area and even overseas.
The town's main heritage piece is the Gothic church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary from the 15th century, with its 14th century presbytery and high altar dating from 1765.
In recent years the town has started taking advantage of its proximity to the border with Poland, turning itself into a tourist centre with restaurants, hotels, private accommodation and other services.
Cultural heritage
The items of cultural heritage which are to be found in this interesting area form a significant attraction for tourists. The cultural heritage list for the region contains the following localities:
Červený Kláštor ("Red Monastery") - national cultural monument
Osturňa - traditional folk architecture reservation
Jezersko - village heritage zone
According to the first documentary records, the Zamagurie area already had established settlements at the turn of the 13th-14th centuries. Further gradual settlement of the territory continued till the end of the 16th century on the basis of shepherding rights.
The most important artefacts of secular and religious architecture :
Červený Kláštor
The church and Carthusian monastery were founded in 1319.
Havka
There is an early 19th century neo-Classical chapel to the Virgin Mary here.
Jezersko
This village consists of an extended sequence of old and new, three-room log cottages.
Lechnica
The village is dominated by its late 19th century church, which was probably built on the site of an early-Gothic church from the beginning of the 14th century.
Mala Frankova
In this village there is a wooden chapel with a belfry from the early 20th century, as well as traditional log cottages.
Matiašovce
This village was founded in the latter part of the 13th century, and the first written mention of it dates from 1326. Matiašovce originally belonged to the Berzeviczy family, and later to the Palocsay-Horvát dynasty.
Agriculture, shepherding and timber-cutting were typical village activities, and a rye-whisky distillery operated here in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Roman Catholic church of St.Peter and St.Paul: late 13th century Gothic church.
Bell-tower: standing near to the church, this original, late 16th century Renaissance building was reconstructed in the second half of the 19th century.
Osturňa
First reports of a village here date back to 1313. Documents from the 16th and 17th centuries record it as a "goral" village.
This loosely strung-out colonization village is the best part of nine kilometres long, and it is dominated by the neo-Classical church of St.Michael the Archangel.
Osturňa has been declared a traditional folk architecture reservation.
There are 133 traditional houses in the village and one house with its own barn, registered as national cultural heritage items in the Slovak Republic’s Central Cultural Heritage List.
Režov
Roman Catholic church of the Raising of the Holy Cross: built after 1787 on the site of an older Renaissance chapel. The sanctuary and sacristy are Renaissance, the nave is from 1787, and the façade was renovated in the early 19th century.
Spišské Hanušovce
Roman Catholic church of St.Andrew.
Roadside chapel to the Virgin Mary, early 19th century neo-Classical style.
Veľká Franková
Established early 14th century, and first mentioned in documents dated 1314.
Church of St.Nicholas the Bishop founded in 1784.
FLOUR-MILL and SAW-MILL
Early 19th century technological heritage.
Recreation
Hiking
The present-day tendency is for hill-walking visitors to the area of the Spišská Magura hills to keep to their southern slopes or to the ridge. This is due to the fact that there are a great many accommodation and catering facilities in the valley from Podspády to Tatranská Kotlina. The most popular route for hikers is the path over the saddle between Jezersko and Bachledová or Blaščatská valleys.
Cycling
Visitors to the Slovak part of Pieniny are commonly cyclists from the Polish side aiming for Červený Kláštor, and returning to Poland via Haligovce, Veľký Lipník and Lesnica.
There is year-round mountain-bike rental in Lesnica, useful for the many mountain-bike routes in the Pieniny National Park and Spišská Magura. The most popular route leads through the Dunajec Gorge.
Rafting and canoeing
The main attraction here is the River Dunajec with its impressive natural features. Below the Three Crowns crags the river starts cutting its narrow way through the 8.5 kilometre-long limestone gorge.
The biggest tourist attraction in Zamagurie are the wooden raft rides down the Dunajec. These have a tradition dating back to the mid-19th century, linking the spa centres at Smerdžonka (nowadays part of Červený Kláštor) and Szcawnica. The rides last between 80 - 120 minutes and end at the place known as Kače.
Apart from traditional rafting, slalom canoeing and inflatable rafting have also become very popular on the Dunajec.
Skiing
The village of Jezersko has developed facilities taking advantage of some great downhill skiing opportunities on the beautiful northern slopes of Spišská Magura. Other ski slopes around Spišská Stará Ves and Červený Kláštor are also suitable for skiers at various skill levels.

The main fishing opportunities are along the River Dunajec, but there are are also suitable locations along the Rieka, Lipničanka and Osturňa streams, as well as at the fish-pools of Červený Kláštor and Spišská Stará Ves.
The vast extent of forests and abundance of game animals in Zamagurie offer great opportunities for hunting.

Nearby attractions - High Tatras, Kežmarok, Levoča, Slovak Paradise National Park (Slovenský raj), castles at Niedzycze and Stará Ľubovňa; pleasure boat trips as far as the Dunajec dam; thermal-spring swimming pools at Vrbov (40 km) and Vyšné Ružbachy spa (30 km).
